Painting On Glass

Painting on Glass can be as easy as painting on any other surface, Enamels are used most often as they dry to a glossy finish and can be "baked" (put in a warm oven to set the paint firmly to the glass) The artist enamels you should use for painting on glass are certified AP Non-Toxic. Items painted with enamels will wash off if put in the harsh environment of the dishwasher. Resist the impulse to put your glass art in the dishwasher. Please hand wash and dry carefully. Before glass painting, always make sure you clean the glass surface carefully with alcohol or soap and water to remove any oily film. This includes fingerprints.

Enamel Glass paints are not like kiln fired ceramic glazes. They do not fuse to the underlying glass but are a durable non-toxic plastic coating that will adhere very well to glass if you follow the following steps. You can burn the coating like toast if you put them in too hot an oven. Charred teacups anyone?

Air dry for 21 days or bake.
Bake:
- Air dry 1 hour
- Place in cool oven, heat to 350°F (177°C).
- Bake 30 minutes, cool in oven, remove.

Even though they are certified non-toxic, glass painting enamels are not recommended for use in direct contact with food.
If you must use the dishwasher, use the top rack and a gentle cycle.
