Begin by deciding what you will use to season your bowl. On our website you can find the Salad bowl finish or Bee's Oil and Wood Preserver for long lasting results. You can also use an ingestible mineral oil (sold in supermarkets as a laxative). Next, run your fingers over the interior of the bowl; if there are any rough patches smooth them out using fine steel wool.
Start seasoning by pouring a tablespoon of oil into the bowl and a half teaspoon of coarse salt. Use a paper towel and gently scour the interior of the bowl with the salt-oil mixture, using a second paper towel to mop up any remaining oil wipe the surface dry. After about an hour pour in another teaspoon of the oil and rub it around the interior of the bowl with your (clean) fingers. When the surface is well oiled, leave it for ten minutes then wipe dry once more with a paper towel. The bowl is now ready for use.
Wood Bowl Cleaning Directions:
To clean the bowl after use simply hand wash it in hot water with a gentle detergent, then re-season it with a little oil, waiting a few minutes before wiping it dry. If needed scour it first with a little salt and oil as directed above. Never leave your bowl in standing water for any length of time.
The seasoning protects and nurtures the wood with a coating of oil, therefore the interior surface of the bowl possesses a warm sheen and no off-putting odors are emitted. In addition this keeps the bowl from cracking after use. |
